NASSCOM Product Conclave (Kolkata chapter) was held at Hyatt Regency on 17th and 18th July to launch, market and establish a killer product. With 2 full days, 9 Workshops, 7 thought provoking panels, 30+ Speakers, 500+ Delegates, 50+ Volunteers, 22+ Exhibits and 6+ Networking breaks, the event was a stupendous success.
NPC Kolkata 2014 gave a unique opportunity for the companies in the product ecosystem to create a buzz. In this Conclave, most of the global and Indian product industry, serial entrepreneurs, CIOs, investors, customers, VCs and angel investors, incubators and accelerators, Government officials and iconic people participated and actively engaged with actionable insights under one roof.

There was a Key Note Address by Dr. Amit Mitra, Minister IT & Electronics, West Bengal, where he shared the perspective of the West Bengal government on IT. He said, “There’s creativity in this great city and this great state. Combine that with IT and you have the most hideous mixture” and “the evolution from mid 80’s to today, is revolutionary in human civilization.”
Vision of the West Bengal Government include the following areas:
IT, Electronic system design and manufacture, Animation and Gaming, Financial services, engineering design, Life sciences, E-Taxation. (West Bengal has become no. 1 in E-Taxation, today), E-Governance, E-Literacy, Entrepreneurial Development, Research and Development, Ecosystem (To have the best institutions of India in and around us who will be providing inputs, like IIT Kharagpur, IIM Calcutta, Indian Statistical Institute, Jadavpur University, BESU, Presidency University and various other centers of excellence), E-District, Integrated Financial Management System, Mobile Governance etc.
He also spoke of the modernized IT policy of the State, to encourage the IT sector. There is a plan of building 13 IT parks ( also focusing on the Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities). 6 locations are notified by the Govt. of India for the development of Hardware Industry (Kolkata, Howrah, Durgapur, Kharagpur, Haldia, Siliguri).
According to an initial outcome of a survey, there are 800+ IT and ITES companies in Bengal including biggies like TCS, IBM, Cognizant, Ericsson and the equally valuable small and medium enterprises.
There were interesting sessions like why is it a good time to be a product entrepreneur, how to build a product ecosystem in the eastern region, lean startup philosophy, bootstrapping for funding, Sales effectiveness strategies etc. The deputy high commissioner of UK was also present in the event and there were discussions on connecting Indian companies to the digital economy in the UK which would help in terms of getting some idealization from them in future.
